Communications Engineering introduces the student to the fundamentals of communications, with a focus on analog and digital communication schemes. Students will learn to represent electrical signals and systems in the time and frequency domains. The course emphasizes the use of communications theory and the application of essential analytical tools, such as the Fourier Transform covered in prerequisite courses. In addition to two theoretic lectures each week, students will benefit from tutorials and a series of interactive laboratory sessions. The course begins with analog modulation schemes, such as Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Modulation (FM). Digital communication principles, such as sampling theory and quantization strategies are also covered prior to an introduction to modern digital communications. Students need to apply the theory learned in the lectures to successfully complete the lab and tutorial sessions. The lab experiments provide the students with opportunities to develop practical skills in the subject area. Lab reports and graded assignments also contribute to the successful completion of this course.
